Pop Art Prints

Medium: original serigraph / silkscreen. In 1964 Samuel Wagstaff, Jr. (at that time Curator of Paintings at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartfordford, Connecticut) selected ten important American artists and asked them to contribute original prints for the portfolio “Ten Works by Ten Painters”. This was issued in 1964 in an edition of 500. The publisher's blindstamp is in the margin near the bottom right corner. Not signed.

The other artists collaborating with the project were Stuart Davis, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, George Ortman, Larry Poons, Ad Reinhardt, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol. Image size: 17 1/2 x 16 inches (445 x 408mm). Printed on wove paper with full original margins, the sheet measures 24 x 20 inches.

Condition: there is a mat stain in the margin.

Medium: original serigraph. Signed and numbered in pencil 82/150. Executed in 1965 for the Paris Review (catalogue reference: Burchfield 2). The image size is 29 x 25 inches and the full sheet size is 40 x 26 inches. An iconic example of 1960's Pop Art.

Condition: there is some wear around the edges of the sheet.

In 1965 the leading Pop and Abstract artists of the era were commissioned by the Paris Review to contribute original prints. These silkscreens were published in small signed/numbered editions (of 150) and today are quite rare. Artists participating in the project included Motherwell, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Indiana, Dine, Oldenburg, Rauschenberg, D'Arcangelo, Anuszkiewicz, Frankenthaler, Katz, Kelly, Nevelson, Rosenquist and others.

Medium: original offset lithograph. Printed on semi-translucent vellum-like Giama Natural paper by Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) and published in 2014 as a special insert for Art in America. Medium: original offset lithograph. This work is also known as "Envelope". Rauschenberg executed this interesting Pop Art classic for Art In America in 1970. It consists of one composition on the front and a different original composition on the back (see the second photo). Printed on laminated paper with a center fold. Jasper Johns was one of the New York artists invited to contribute original compositions in homage to poet Frank O'Hara (1926-1966) for the "In Memory of My Feelings" project in 1967. Size: 12 x 9 inches (303 x 227 mm). There is a poem by Frank O'Hara above the lithograph.

Roy Lichtenstein was one of the New York artists invited to contribute original compositions in homage to poet Frank O'Hara (1926-1966) for the "In Memory of My Feelings" project in 1967. The lithograph itself measures 12 x 9 inches (303 x 227 mm) and the entire sheet size is 12 x 18 inches (303 x 455 mm). There is a fold in the middle and the poem is on one side. Since the full sheet is a bit large for our scanner, the second photo shows most but not quite all of the composition.

Medium: original lithograph. Executed in 1978 by Franco Gentilini for XXe Siecle (No. 50) and published in Paris by San Lazzaro. Size: 12 x 9 1/4 inches (307 x 235 mm). A nice impression on quality wove paper. Not signed.

Medium: original lithograph. Tito Varisco was a well known scenographer (set designer), and this print was inspired by the Bela Bartok opera "The Miraculous Mandarin", and was executed for the second volume (1956-57) of very rare Documenti d'Arte d'Oggi, published in Milan by Groupe Espace. Printed on a light brown paper, the full sheet size is 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches (218 x 318mm). Signed and titled in the plate, not by hand.

Medium: original lithograph multiple. This unusual work consists of a strip of paper with a lithographed design that can be pulled through another paper section, cut in the shape of a television screen, to create the effect of a moving pattern. As an important scenographer (set designer) in Milan, Tito Varisco had a special interest in the emerging medium of television and its relation to the other visual arts. Published by Groupe Espace in Milan for the very rare Documenti d'Arte d'Oggi (1955-56). The total sheet measures 12 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches (318 x 217mm). Not signed.

Condition: there is age-toning to the paper and a small tear in the viewer section.
